SAN FRANCISCO, December 06, 2021– (BUSINESS WIRE) – James [Jim] Mr. Welsch, Senior Vice President, Generation and Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO) of Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), informed the company of his intention to retire on December 31, 2021 after 37 years of service.

Welsch joined PG&E in 1984 and held various management positions at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) before assuming his current role. In his current role, he has been responsible for the utility’s power generation assets, overseeing more than 2,000 employees engaged in the safe, reliable and affordable operation of nuclear, natural gas, hydroelectric and renewable generation resources. the company. He also supervises the dismantling activities of the company’s power plants. Welsch obtained his Main Reactor Operator’s license and is a graduate of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations Nuclear Senior Staff Seminar and the Hudson Institute of Coaching Certification Program. Welsch holds a BS in Nuclear Technology from Regents College, New York and previously served in the US Navy Nuclear Submarine Service.

Paula Gerfen, the current PG&E Site Vice President for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant and a 30-year veteran of the nuclear industry, has been appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer. Gerfen will serve as PG&E’s primary contact with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations.

Gerfen started his career at DCPP in 1991 as a digital engineer and has held various positions of increasing responsibility. She obtained her Principal Reactor Operator License in 2007 and is a graduate of the INPO Senior Nuclear Plant Manager course as well as the Nuclear Operational Risk Management course at MIT. Prior to joining PG&E, Gerfen served in the US Air Force and received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

As Gerfen assumes his new role, Adam Peck will become the new site vice president for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant. As such, Peck will oversee all departments and functions of the plant, including operations, maintenance, engineering, safety and radiation protection. Peck joined PG&E in 2009 after serving as a Submarine Officer and Watch Engineer in the US Navy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University.
