Programming languages: this old favorite is gaining popularity again

Microsoft’s C # has always been a popular language thanks to .NET developers, but this year it has seen a surge in popularity.

Tiobe Software CEO Paul Jansen said C # is “by far the most likely candidate” to be named programming language of the year, given the language that saw the largest increase in ratings over the course of the year. of a given year.

C # was designed by Anders Hejlsberg of Microsoft and released in 2000. Microsoft released version 10 of C # in November alongside .NET 6 for Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as Visual Studio 2022, its first 64-bit version of Visual Studio. The .NET version also natively supports Apple Arm64 Silicon and Windows Arm64.

C # is currently the fifth most popular language in Tiobe’s rankings, which are based on queries engineers and developers make on popular search engines and websites. It hit its highest ranking – number three – in 2012, but interest seems to be on the rise again.

“It is interesting that C # has never won the ‘TIOBE Index Programming Language of the Year’ award in its 21 year history, despite making it into the top 10 in over the past 20 years, ”Jansen said.

Currently, the most popular language on the Tiobe index remains Python, followed by C, Java, and C ++. The top 10 is completed by Visual Basic, JavaScript, Assembly Language, SQL and Swift.

Last month Jansen pointed out the slow but steady decline of PHP as a popular language. He was 10th in November and 12th in December.

PHP contributors, including IDE maker JetBrains, announced last month the creation of the PHP Foundation, which is a collective offering to secure the future of the scripting language. It was created in response to the departure of a contributor who maintained almost only the core components of PHP.
