Programming tribute to Sidney Poitier at OWN – Deadline

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network said on Friday she would honor Sidney Poitier with a special Sunday programming day that includes the iconic actor’s appearances in 2000 and 2007 on The Oprah Winfrey Show and a screening of his 1967 film to sir, with love.

Poitier, the revolutionary and Oscar-winning actor and civil rights activist, died on Friday at the age of 94.

The network also said it will air the 2015 special. Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Legends That Led The Way featuring Poitier at a gala honoring “some of the legendary men and extraordinary women of the civil rights movement who have made history”.

“For me the tallest of the ‘Big Trees’ has fallen: Sidney Poitier,” Winfrey said today. “My honor to have loved him as a mentor. Friend. Brother. Confidant. Professor of wisdom. The greatest consideration and praise for her most magnificent, gracious and eloquent life. I cherished it. I loved it. He had a huge soul that I will cherish forever. Blessings to Joanna and her world of beautiful girls.
