RBC Foundation supports new climate change management program at Laurier

WATERLOO — RBC Foundation announced a new partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University on November 9, 2022 to support new programs in the area of ​​climate change management. RBC Foundation’s $850,000 gift through its Future Launch program will support experiential learning, research and teaching to prepare students for critical emerging careers in climate change management.

“I am truly thrilled and grateful for the support of RBC Foundation as we increase experiential opportunities for our students in the area of ​​climate change management,” said Anthony J. Clarke, Dean of the Faculty of Science. “Thanks to RBC’s support, our graduates will leave Laurier better equipped to meet the complex challenges of climate change.

The donation was announced at an event called “Building a Sustainable and Inclusive Future of Work” hosted by RBC at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo. The event included a panel discussion between Dave McKay, President and CEO of RBC; Deborah MacLatchy, President, Wilfrid Laurier University; Vivek Goel, President, University of Waterloo; and John Tibbits, president, Conestoga College. It was moderated by Claude DeMone, Regional President, Southwestern Ontario, RBC.

In front of an audience of over 100 community members, RBC employees, university representatives, and community and business leaders, Participants discussed the importance of public-private partnerships to foster inclusive and just transitions to a more sustainable future and to support young people towards successful careers in this changing context.

During the roundtable, Ms. MacLatchy expressed her gratitude to RBC and all that the RBC-Laurier partnership can accomplish.

“Now is the time to act on climate change,” MacLatchy said. “Laurier develops and supports talent who will be leaders in advancing planetary health and achieving positive results. We are thrilled to partner with RBC, an organization that shares our commitment to developing leaders and providing them with the skills and abilities they need to thrive.

Through its Future Launch program, RBC is also supporting the University of Waterloo and Conestoga College through a partnership that empowers today’s youth for the jobs of tomorrow.

“At RBC, we are committed to working with Canada’s brightest minds to help young people succeed in the future world of work,” said DeMone. “We are excited to continue our longstanding partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University with the goal of supporting the next generation of leaders who can drive change and catalyze ideas to help transition to a net zero economy.

“As a geography student with a passion for the environment and climate change, I am excited to see the leadership and collaboration in this area that will come from RBC-supported programs in climate change management,” said Amber -Buston White, a Laurier student who is also featured in an RBC Future Launch video. “This programming will ensure students have specialized and essential knowledge that will empower them to work towards a sustainable future to the best of their abilities within their professional abilities. RBC has a long history of supporting Wilfrid Laurier University, focusing primarily on experiential education and athletics, as well as fundraising. Through RBC Future Launch, the company also supports many post-secondary institutions in Canada, including the University of Guelph, York University and Western University.
