AsianScientist (March 23, 2022) – From April 2022, five Singaporean research teams could access high-performance computing (HPC) resources from Japan’s Fugaku system, the world’s most powerful supercomputer. The resources were made available through a partnership between the National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) in Singapore and the Japan Research Organization for Information Science and Technology (RIST).
In November 2021, NSCC and RIST signed an agreement to provide researchers in Singapore with regular access to Fugaku through an annual call for proposals. HPC experts from both countries evaluated 16 entries in the inaugural selection.
Five projects were granted access to one million node-hours of HPC resources for up to one year. Research spans a variety of sectors, including materials engineering, advanced manufacturing, and climate science.
Approved projects include: “Excitonic Effects in Nonlinear Optical Processes of Emergent Materials” and “Simulation of Air-Sea Interactions with AI Accelerated Computational Fluid Dynamics” from teams at National University of Singapore; “Big HPC Code Implementing the Adjoint-state Travel-time Tomography Method” and “Designing Stable, Active, and Selective Ni-based Nanoparticles for Dehydrogenation of Liquid Organic Hydrides” by researchers from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and “Ultra-wide Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Concentrated and Gradient Complex Nanostructured Alloys for Engineering Applications” from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
These researchers will be able to leverage first-class HPC resources, including Fugaku’s ARM chip-based architecture and more than 158,000 processors. Performing 442,010 trillion calculations per second, the system can support breakthroughs in big data analytics and artificial intelligence. As of June 2020, Fugaku has maintained its top spot as the most powerful supercomputer in the world.
