Tempers were raised on Monday night, however, as it became clear that Jermain Defoe would re-sign for the club.
Defoe became Sunderland’s sixth signing in a busy transfer window in January, following the arrivals of Trai Hume, Danny Batth, Patrick Roberts, Jack Clarke and Jay Matete.
